AI can build you a website in 10 minutes.
I’ve seen the demos. I’ve watched the videos. I’ve even tried some of the tools myself.
And honestly? They’re impressive.
You type in a few prompts, answer some questions, and boom. You’ve got a website.
Fast. Easy. Free (or at least cheap).
So why would you pay someone to design your website when AI can do it for you?
Because there are three critical things that happen between “AI generates a website” and “you have a website you’re actually proud of.” And those three things are exactly where AI falls flat.
Let me break it down.
AI Can Generate. But It Can’t Know What You Don’t Know.
Here’s the thing about AI: it’s only as good as what you tell it.
If you prompt it well, if you already have clarity on your positioning and messaging, AI can be incredibly helpful. It can refine your copy. It can suggest layouts. It can speed up your process.
But here’s where most people get stuck: they don’t have that clarity yet.
And that’s the whole problem.
You can’t ask AI to develop your positioning if you don’t know what makes you different. You can’t prompt it to write compelling copy if you haven’t figured out who you’re talking to or what they actually need to hear.
AI will give you something. It’ll generate content. It’ll create pages.
But if you’re unclear on:
- What makes you different from everyone else doing what you do
- Who your ideal clients are and what actually matters to them
- What to emphasize and what to leave out
- How to talk about your work in a way that connects
Then AI is just going to give you generic positioning wrapped in nice words.
The real work isn’t getting AI to generate content. It’s getting clear on what to tell it in the first place.
And most people skip that step. They think AI will figure it out for them.
It won’t.
AI can help you refine strategy if you already have it. But it can’t build strategic clarity for you.
That requires someone who can:
- Ask you the hard questions
- Understand the nuances of your business and market
- Help you see what makes you different (even when you can’t see it yourself)
- Translate all of that into clear positioning and messaging
You end up with a website that looks fine but says nothing memorable. Because “professional business coach who helps entrepreneurs grow” could be literally anyone.
AI Can Copy. AI Can’t Capture YOU.
Let’s talk about personality.
Your personality is your biggest differentiator. It’s what makes people choose YOU specifically instead of someone else with similar services and pricing.
But AI has no idea what your personality actually is.
It generates content based on patterns it’s learned from millions of websites. Which means it sounds like… everyone else.
Even if you prompt it with “write this in a casual, friendly tone,” you’re still going to get AI’s version of casual and friendly. Not YOUR version.
AI can’t:
- Capture the way you actually talk (the phrases you use, the way you explain things)
- Reflect your energy (what it feels like to be in a room with you or on a call)
- Show your unique perspective (your specific take on your industry)
- Create that gut feeling of “I like this person”
It can create “professional” copy. But professional often means bland and forgettable.
And here’s what happens when your website sounds like everyone else: people have no reason to choose YOU specifically.
They read your website and think “okay, this person does [service]” but they don’t think “I NEED to work with this specific person.”
Personality is what makes you memorable.
It’s what makes people feel connected to you before they ever hop on a call. It’s what turns “I’m shopping around” into “I’ve already decided I want to work with you.”
When your website sounds like you, marketing becomes so much easier. Because you’re not trying to be something you’re not. You’re just showing up as yourself and attracting people who vibe with that.
AI can’t do that. It can only remix what it’s seen before.
Even with the best prompts, you’ll get polished content that sounds like it came from a tool. Because it did.h the best prompts, you’ll get polished content that sounds like it came from a tool. Because it did.
AI Can Suggest. But It Can’t Design With Soul.
This is where AI really falls apart.
AI understands conversion principles intellectually. It knows that testimonials build trust. It knows that clear CTAs matter. It knows the technical rules.
But translating strategy into design that FEELS right? That requires human judgment.
Here’s what I mean:
Color Psychology
AI can tell you that blue conveys trust and orange conveys energy. But it can’t feel which shade of blue matches YOUR energy. It can’t tell when a color palette feels cohesive or when it feels off.
Visual Hierarchy
AI can create technically correct layouts. But it can’t make the judgment call about what to emphasize based on YOUR specific audience and the emotional journey you want to create.
Spacing and Flow
AI follows templates and best practices. But it doesn’t understand the difference between “this feels open and breathable” and “this feels cluttered and overwhelming” in the context of YOUR brand.
The Vibe
This is the big one. AI can’t design for vibe.
It can’t tell when something looks “strategically correct” but doesn’t FEEL like you. It can’t sense when a layout is technically fine but the energy is all wrong.
Design isn’t just about following rules. It’s about making a thousand tiny judgment calls that add up to something that feels cohesive and intentional.
And those judgment calls? They require someone who:
- Understands you and your business
- Can see your website through your ideal client’s eyes
- Knows when to follow best practices and when to break them
- Can balance “what converts” with “what feels authentic to you”
That’s not something you can prompt AI to do.
You end up with websites that are technically fine but have no soul. They look like websites. They function like websites. But they don’t feel like anything..
When AI Works (And When It Doesn’t)
LLook, I’m not anti-AI.
I use AI tools all the time. For brainstorming. For refining copy once I know what I want to say. For getting unstuck when I’m staring at a blank page.
AI is a powerful tool. But it’s just that… a tool.
Here’s when AI works great:
- Brainstorming angles or ideas when you already have direction
- Refining copy after you’ve written a rough draft
- Generating variations once you know what you’re going for
- Speeding up tasks that you already know how to do
Here’s when AI falls flat:
- When you need help building clarity (not just executing on clarity you already have)
- When you need someone to translate strategy into cohesive visual design
- When you need judgment calls about what feels right for YOUR specific business and audience
- When you need a website that has soul, not just structure
Use AI as a tool, not a replacement for strategic thinking and creative judgment.
If you’re using AI to “save money” on your website, you’re probably going to spend more time (and money) dealing with a website that doesn’t work.
Because a website that doesn’t feel like you, doesn’t connect with your audience, and doesn’t convert isn’t saving you money. It’s costing you clients.
The best approach? Human strategy and design with AI efficiency where it makes sense.
Let AI handle the repetitive stuff. But bring in human expertise for the things that actually matter.
What Human-Led Design Actually Means (And Why It Matters)
When I say “human-led design,” I’m not talking about being anti-technology.
I’m talking about being pro-YOU.
Human-led design means:
- Starting with clarity, not templates
- Building your website around YOUR positioning, YOUR personality, YOUR goals
- Having someone who can ask the right questions and help you get clear
- Translating strategy into design that feels cohesive and intentional
- Making judgment calls that AI can’t make
It’s the difference between a website that exists and a website that works.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Strategic Foundation First
Before we touch design, we get clear on:
- Who you actually serve (not just demographics, but psychographics)
- What makes you different from everyone else in your space
- What your ideal clients need to see, hear, and feel to choose you
- How to guide them from “just browsing” to “ready to work with you”
This isn’t something you get from answering AI prompts. It comes from deep conversation, strategic questioning, and someone who can help you see what you can’t see about yourself.
Personality-Driven Messaging
Your website doesn’t sound like a template. It sounds like YOU.
- We use your actual voice and language
- We show your perspective and expertise
- We create connection, not just information
- We make people feel like they already know you
AI can’t do this. Even with the best prompts, it’s still generating content based on patterns. A human writer can capture the way you actually talk, the phrases you use, the energy you bring.
Design That Feels Right
Every visual choice is intentional:
- Colors that match your energy (not just “what’s trendy”)
- Layouts that guide people through YOUR specific journey
- Spacing and hierarchy that feels cohesive
- Design that supports the message (not just decoration)
This is where AI completely falls apart. Because design isn’t just about following rules. It’s about feeling.
The Result?
A website that you’re actually proud to share. One that attracts the right people, converts them into clients, and feels like an authentic extension of you and your work.
That’s what AI can’t do.
It can give you structure. It can give you suggestions. It can speed up execution.
But it can’t give you clarity, capture your personality, or design with soul.
The Bottom Line
AI is getting better every day. The tools are impressive. The speed is incredible.
But speed isn’t the same as clarity.
Templates aren’t the same as positioning.
And generated content isn’t the same as YOU.
If you want a website fast and you’re okay with something generic, AI tools can do that.
But if you want a website that:
- Actually reflects who you are
- Positions you strategically in your market
- Converts visitors into clients
- Feels like an authentic extension of your work
You need human-led design.
You need someone who can help you build clarity, capture your personality, and translate strategy into design that has soul.
You need someone who sees your website as a strategic tool that represents YOU, not just a collection of pages that exist.
And that’s exactly what I do.
